. The Bonn Development Workshop for Computer Media (BEC)
. .
. 1987
Dedicated media artists and scientists gathered in the surroundings of Bonn University. They were fascinated by the developments in the "new media" that were just beginning at that time, and the new possibilities that they were opening. Their goal was, and is, an unparalleled synthesis of natural science and art. "Installation Naro", an interactive sound installation was their first project.

with "Reconstruction of a Forest", a large scale installation concerning the problems of the rain forest, they opened up a completely new path of media education that excited a very positive reaction amongst the public. In 1990, the non-profit organisation the Bonn Development Workshop for Computer Media (BEC) arose out of the group. Since that time, Dr. Bodo Lensch has been chairman of the executive committee. The creation of a continuously available forum for culture and media technology was designated as one of the most important goals of the organisation. Ten years later, this goal was achieved with the opening of the ANIMAX Multimedia Theatre.

From 1989 on, the BEC used a room in the "carpet factory" in the Bonn suburb of Beuel, which was developed into a temporary multimedia theatre. Although the conditions were far from ideal - time and again the auditorium had to be cleared to make way for rehearsals of the Bonn Opera - a number of exhibitions and performances took place.
