With the opening of theANIMAX Multimedia Theatre on June 22nd 1999, the Bonn Development Workshop for Computer Media (registered society) (BEC) realised a project which had taken ten years of intensive work from many dedicated people from across the region: For the first time, North Rhine-Westphalia has a constantly available resource as a forum for culture and media technology.

In this forum the BEC has three points of emphasis: "Art meets Multimedia" - in the ANIMAX Multimedia Theatre, the traditional stage arts of music, dance and acting are combined with the latest multimedia technology. Artists from various fields work together with technicians, engineers and computer scientists. In this international research laboratory for new forms of artistic representation, novel performances, installations and concerts are fashioned by media concepts. The new "media tools", which have arisen out of the artistic process extend the forms of representation and experience of the traditional stage arts, but they can also be employed in media presentations in other areas in the spheres of science or business. Guest productions, projects from other media institutions and joint productions complement and enrich the theatre's programme.

A second focal point of the ANIMAX Multimedia Theatre concerns media education projects, in which children and young people learn the conscious organisation of the instruments of media communication, and thereby one of the fundamental cultural techniques of the future. At the same time, ANIMAX offers regional research institutions and businesses a forum for the presentation of forward looking projects.

As a result of its innovative character, the ANIMAX Multimedia Theatre has been recognised as one of the registered World-wide Projects of the World Exhibition EXPO 2000.
